Winter Brings Roof Leaks
With all the rain we had this past summer, many homeowners experienced roof leaks they didn’t expect. And with small leaks, some homeowners have probably also experienced how difficult it can be to find a roofing contractor who will come out and repair small leaks or other water damage in your roof.
Now with old man winter on the grey horizon, you’ll want to check out your roof to make sure that all that rain didn’t do any damage that will only get worse as the winter cold, ice and snow set in.
GAF, a New Jersey-based roofing supply manufacturer and one of our preferred vendors offer the following six tips on how to best prepare your roof for the cold weather:
6 Steps to Protect Roofs and Stop Roof Leaks
- Check the roof framing structure to make sure it is not compromised. Look for sagging in the roofing system or uneven areas in the decking. If you see this sort of sagging in the roof, it may be because there is damage to the wood under your roof. Something you definitely need to get checked out by a roofing contractor. And yes, Reeves Roofing can handle this for you as well!
- Inspect your gutters to make sure they are clean and aren’t clogged with debris of any kind. This is important to ensure that the rain and/or snow have a way to clear off the roof and now dam up and cause possible water damage. During the winter months, the leading cause of roofing leaks is when snow is left standing on the roof to create ice dams.
- While checking your gutters, make sure that they are properly fastened and they are secure. You don’t want overflow and build-up to pull the gutters away as to allow water or snow to get behind the gutter and create water damage to your fascia and soffits.
- Check all valleys on your roof. Blow off any excess debris which can create a barrier for the snow which can lead to ice damming on your roof. Leaks occur quite often in valleys so make sure you double check here debris or exposures of any kind.
- Probably the number cause of all roof leaks comes from or around flashing. By flashing we mean the aluminum penetrations, the metal used around your chimney to keep water out, the flashing that runs under your shingles along any side walls, etc. Flashing is used around vents, pipes, skylights, and other penetrations. It’s recommended to inspect these annually, some roofers offer Roofing Tune Ups, and reseal / replace as suggested by your roofing contractor. Better to find these challenges now and not have to Fix a Leaking Roof later.
- Inspect your shingles to determine if there are any signs of trouble ahead. Look for cracked shingles, curling edges, or see if there is an abnormal amount of granules missing.
