SEVERE HAIL DAMAGE/WIND DAMAGE IN UPSTATE SC
Date of Storm:  March 14, 2016

HAILSTORM WAS WORST SINCE 1985

Match 14, 2016:  The massive storms / hailstorms brought down trees, left considerable and extensive wind damage, and dumped hail in several areas. Greer, Duncan, and Taylors clearly saw the worst with many residents and news agencies reporting golf ball sized hail. Quarter size hail was reported in Greenville while Dacusville saw marble size hail. There was also flooding along Highway in Spartanburg.

As of late last evening, Duke Power said 2,000+ people were without power in Greenville County during the height of the storm, mostly in downtown Greenville.

WHNS_Fox_CarolinaFOX CAROLINA REPORTS:  So many of you were saying that this is the worst hail you’ve seen EVER across our area. Kendra Kent stated they had contacted the National Weather Service at GSP.

Hailstorm - Hail - Roof Damage - Greenville - Spartanburg - Reeves Roof - Construction 07Apparently, we haven’t seen anything like this in both Greenville and Spartanburg counties since June 7, 1985!

We see hail quite a bit across the Upstate during the spring and early summer, but it doesn’t normally get to extremely large sizes.

Only 12 times has Spartanburg Co. seen hail of 2” or larger in the last 66 years!!!! Greenville County has only had it happen 8 times! This is all according to National Climate Data Center. We had reports of golf ball and egg sized hail in both counties, which is nearly 2″ or greater.

So this isn’t unheard of, but VERY rare!!!!

The supercell thunderstorm fueled the hailstorm that swept across the Upstate Monday evening and caused so much damage at Duncan Elementary School that the school will be closed Tuesday.

Hailstorm - Hail - Roof Damage - Greenville - Spartanburg - Reeves Roof - Construction 01Hail, high winds and heavy rain pounded these areas!

The storm that caused the damage developed in Pickens County. It stayed severe as it moved across Greenville, Spartanburg, Cherokee, Union and York counties, said Trisha Palmer, National Weather Service meteorologist at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport.

“It left a swath of all sorts of havoc wreaked,” she said. “We had ping pong ball-sized hail here at the airport.”

Hail reports were common in places like Greer, Duncan and Roebuck.

“It was a lot of hail. A lot of hail,” Turner said.

S.C. Highway Patrol troopers reported Ian Court at Southport Road in Spartanburg was closed for a period Monday evening by the hail pileup.

Most of Monday’s damage came from an uncommon type of storm to the Upstate – a supercell. A supercell differs from normal thunderstorms in that it moves over large areas of land, Palmer said.

She said Monday’s storm was rotating, but at no point was a funnel cloud or tornado reported.

Doug Bryson, Spartanburg County’s emergency management coordinator, agreed that Monday’s taste of severe weather was just the beginning of a pattern Upstate residents should get used to during the spring and summer.

Strong and severe thunderstorms are most common as temperatures warm across the area.

“People need to be aware it’s this time of year,” Bryson said.

Palmer said Monday’s storm should serve as a warning that storms accompanied by severe thunderstorm warnings can be just as dangerous as tornado-warned storms.
